Want an Oscar? Support minorities

Image This year marks five years since the inception of the famous hashtag OscarsSoWhite. In early 2015, the American Film Academy fell under a flurry of criticism due to the fact that not a single black actor, screenwriter or director appeared in the main Oscar nominations. Since then, the organization has worked to ensure that Oscar-nominated films provide a dignified representation of ethnic, social and gender groups. Today it became known that the fight for social justice is reaching a new level.

The Academy announced the introduction of new rules for the selection of films in the Best Film of the Year nomination. The organization introduces four standards of representation. Filmmakers will have to meet at least two of these requirements to qualify for the Oscar race. To meet Standard A, filmmakers need to either devote history to minority issues, take on key roles from underrepresented ethnic groups, or have at least 30% of the cast of women, LGBT people, racial minorities and people with cognitive and physical disabilities.

Standard B sets requirements for offscreen teams. Filmmakers again have three options. They should give representatives of ethnic, social and gender minorities either two positions of heads of departments (casting, costume design, makeup, special effects, etc.), or six positions in supporting positions (assistant producers, etc.), or form the project team so that the aforementioned groups make up at least 30% of its total number.

Standard C requires studios to introduce internship and continuing education programs. Finally, Standard D focuses on minority representation in marketing, PR and distribution departments of companies. If the studio has few women, LGBT and ethnic groups, it will seriously diminish her chances of winning the Oscar.

Film companies have several years to adapt to the new Hollywood realities: the selection rules for the Best Film category will take effect in full in 2024.
