Iannucci Tells the Story of a Sumo Kid

Image British satirist and director Armando Iannucci, best known for the scandalous Death of Stalin and the TV series Vice President, teamed up with producer Ian Zenow (1 + 1) to create a comedy about growing up in an amateur sumo wrestling environment. Iannucci will executive produce alongside BAFTA winners Emily Leo, Oliver Roskilde and others.

For now, the untitled film tells the story of Jonah, a plump but outgoing teen who suffers from low self-esteem and peer bullying. One day, the hero meets the school cleaner Nana, a former sumo wrestler, and this meeting changes his life. Together with the pedantic and lonely caretaker, the unusual trio decide to build a dojo (martial arts training hall) to prepare for the US Open Sumo Championship.

The script will be written by Richard Galazka, and the role of Nana will be played by Susie Nakamura ("Dr. Ken"). The film will be directed by Australian director Natalie Bailey, who has already collaborated with Iannucci on the TV series Thicket. Filming will begin in late spring in Cape Town, South Africa.
