Hugh Laurie and Tilda Swinton to star in Dickens' adaptation

Image House's star Hugh Laurie, who made the show so popular today, and Oscar-winning Tilda Swinton, who has worked with a host of famous directors from Fincher to Jarmusch, will star in the film adaptation of Charles Dickens's David Copperfield, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The process will be led by Armando Iannucci, best known to the USA audience for the scandalous satirical comedy Death of Stalin.

On the set of The Personal Story of David Copperfield *, the cast will be accompanied by Dev Patel (The Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) and Ben Whishaw (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), approved back in February. Simon Blackwell will rework the conventionally autobiographical novel into a screenplay format. The director and screenwriter have already worked together on In the Loop, which received an Oscar nomination for the screenplay.

The details of the plot have not yet been revealed, but the authors call their approach to history fresh and modern. Filming will begin this June in the UK. Kevin Lowder, also Iannucci's acquaintance from the collaboration on Death of Stalin, will help the director to cope with the production duties. This is not the first film adaptation of one of Dickens's most popular works: in 1999, ten-year-old Daniel Radcliffe played Copperfield in the BBC miniseries.
