The Martian " Ridley Scott is one of the most anticipated premieres this fall. This is a fantastic story of a cheerful astronaut, stuck on Mars for a long time and forced to survive using all his ingenuity.CinemaBlend journalists managed to talk with the leading actor Matt Damon , the director of the film Ridley Scott , the author of the book Andy Weir and the chief Division of Planetary Sciences NASA by Dr. Jim Green at a press conference in Los Angeles. They shared interesting facts about the making of the film, as well as how the fictional story relates to scientific evidence. Beware of spoilers! 1. From "Alien" to "Martian" Ridley Scott is considered a legend in science fiction, as it was he who shot two of perhaps the most iconic films in this genre - "Alien" and "Blade Runner". Hence the question: how does “ The Martian ” fit into this legacy of the science fiction director? According to Scott , he tried to create a futuristic film based more on science than imagination: “The essence of science fiction is the fantasy component. In Andy Weir's story , I like the reality of the situation. There is one movie that I love very much - “The Right Guys”. It tells about the very beginning of the space age. It is clear that “ The Martian ” is different from him in design, but I liked the plausibility of what is happening”. This is why the director turned to for help.  2. Harsh gravity Of course, Ridley Scott tried very hard to make sure that his fiction does not lose touch with reality, but still something may well cause indignation among experts who have read a lot about space. Martian gravity is significantly less than Earth's: it is only 40%, but this is not reflected in the film in any way, perhaps even for technical reasons. It is very difficult to show such subtleties in cinema. Matt Damon remarked: “Such things have to be taken for granted, since it is simply unrealistic to simulate a place where there would be only 40% of Earth's gravity. Even with a complete absence of gravity, it is much easier, there they simply attach ropes to you, or you can use an airplane that provides a state of weightlessness. But 40% can only be trusted”. Ridley Scott offered his own explanation: it is also necessary to take into account the weight of the spacesuit, thanks to which the astronaut will definitely not flutter like a butterfly. So if you need a reason why Damon's hero moves like this and not otherwise, that reason is a spacesuit.  3. Water supply on Mars To survive on Mars for a long time, Mark Watney needs all the essentials for life, such as water. And not only to drink, but also to grow something. In order to replenish his reserves, the astronaut launches a rather laborious process of obtaining precious moisture, although, which is actually funny, getting water on Mars is not at all as difficult as it might seem. And all because science does not stand still. In a conversation with reporters, the author of the novel Andy Weir admitted: “When this annoying rover Curiosity ended up on the red planet and began taking soil samples, my book was already written, and I couldn't change anything about it. But there are 35 liters of water for every cubic meter. Brand all that was needed was to bring some earth and heat it ...". What can you do about it? The film is still artistic. Let's hope that the viewer will still enjoy the movie about an intelligent and resourceful astronaut.  4. Martian selfie, or "I am quietly talking to myself" Loneliness and complete isolation from the outside world can turn into a disaster for a person, and we have seen this more than once in films. In " The Martian " nothing of the kind will happen: Watney will try to keep his sanity, constantly saying something in front of the cameras, of which there are a lot of them. Ridley Scott stresses: “Cameras are his only company. He continues to talk, no matter where he is, in his home or in the rover, and carries on the conversation as if they were his friends. There are about 50 of these cameras stuck in his habitat. In fact, they are black boxes: if something goes wrong, they can be used to track why, when and how it happened. " Does the viewer lose anything from the fact that Matt Damon often speaks directly to the audience? Absolutely nothing: with his charm and humor, his hero will certainly adorn the harsh story of the struggle for survival.  5. Generation of Mars According to Matt Damon , screenwriter Drew Goddard's job was to inspire scientists. Science can be fun, spectacular and just plain cool, and we will see all of this thanks to Mark Watney . The film has another curious facet - the characteristics of the audience to which it is addressed. Dr. Jim Green , Head of the Division of Planetary Sciences NASA , called it"the Mars generation": "I and Ridley belong to the generation that witnessed the first steps of man on the moon. It was incredible, but now, thanks to Curiosity , the attention of people around the world is riveted to Mars. This will serve as a source of inspiration for scientists and engineers who will create further developments.  We just have to wait for the premiere, which will take place on October 8 .
