Mike Lee to talk about the Manchester Massacre

Image As reported by The Hollywood Reporter , Mike Lee has once again found inspiration in books on the history of England and in his new film will tell about one of the most important episodes of social reform in the UK.

The director, whose previous film, William Turner, earned Timothy Spall, who starred in it, a prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival , said he plans to make a film about the infamous Manchester Massacre.

In 1819, in St. Peter's Square in Manchester, the British cavalry dispersed a demonstration, which attracted more than 60 thousand citizens. They opposed industrialization, which brought the economy to crisis, and also for the granting of suffrage to the poor. On that day, 15 people were killed and about 700 demonstrators were injured. The rally marked a turning point in British history and led to the creation of the Manchester Guardian newspaper, now The Guardian .

“No director made a film about the Manchester Massacre,- noted Lee . -This story was politically significant, but for me it is also personal, as I am a native of Salford, Manchester ”.

On the new film, the director will work with a team of like-minded people: producer Georgina Lowe and cinematographer Dick Pope, who was nominated for Oscar for William Turner .
