Valle will tell the love story of John and Yoko
Universal is in talks to acquire the rights to an as-yet-untitled drama that will tell the love story of musician John Lennon and his muse, artist Yoko Ono. According to Deadline, Jean-Marc Vallee will be the director of the project. After the success of the dramas Dallas Buyers Club, starring Matthew McConaughey, and Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon, the director was shortlisted for Bond 25. But he chose to ditch the spy franchise and instead tackle the story of Lennon and Ono. The film company acquired the rights to the film from Michael De Luca's studio, who took over the production functions. Anthony McCarten (Bohemian Rhapsody, Dark Times) worked on the script for the planned biopic.Lennon and Ono first met in the late 60s, when she was an aspiring avant-garde artist and he was one of the biggest music stars in the world. Yoko became a faithful companion of John during the era of The Beatles, and after the breakup of the group, when the singer began a solo career. Also, activists together opposed the Vietnam War. After a brief breakup in the mid-1970s, they got back together and stayed together until Lennon's tragic death in 1980 in New York. Today, Ono owns the rights to the music of John Lennon and all of his legacy.  Both the director and screenwriter of the upcoming project grew up under the influence of Lennon's work. Vallee noted that the celebrity couple is the most recognizable symbol of the politically unstable 60s and 70s. According to the producers, the film explores the history of their relationship and explains why they stayed together, despite numerous accusations against Ono for the collapse of The Beatles. At the same time, the plot of the picture will only slightly touch on the murder of the famous musician, and instead will focus on the life of the couple. It is assumed that John's music will be used as a soundtrack, as his widow will take part in the production of the tape. The producers began collaborating with Yoko Ono early last year. The drama production process dragged on for several years, but now the project is firmly on its feet. Valle met with the artist in person before taking on the film. The director now plans to tweak the script with Anthony McCarten. Most likely, the picture will go into development next year.
