Tolkien prevented John Lennon from becoming Gollum
It is common knowledge that the Beatles were planning to make a movie based on Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, but it was not previously reported that the writer himself opposed this idea. As told in an interview with People, Peter Jackson. John Lennon planned to play Gollum, Paul McCartney as Frodo, Ringo Starr as Sam, and George Harrison as Gandalf. The musicians even invited Stanley Kubrick to take the director's chair. However, Tolkien, who still owned the rights to his works, did not allow the Beatles to movie his main work. According to Jackson, McCartney was glad that that the project was never given the green light as the movie would have been mainly focused on Lennon.
