Universal prepares second player

Image Only the fantastic action game Ready Player One was released when Universal stepped up work on yet another project based on the work of Ernest Kline. This is not surprising, given that Steven Spielberg's film grossed $ 186 million on its debut weekend. According to Deadline, Kline's dizzying career in Hollywood will continue, and his second work, Armada, is next.

Universal bought the rights to adapt the book back in 2012. The major also has the first version of the script, written by Kline himself. It is noteworthy that the author simultaneously worked on the version of "Armada" for publication in the publishing house and the text of its film version. Now the duties of the screenwriter of the film will pass to Dan Mazo ("Wrath of the Titans").

Like Ready Player One, Armada is full of various 80s and 90s pop culture references. The protagonist of the book is a teenager Zach Lightman, who once learned that the video game he was playing was in fact being used by a secret government organization to recruit recruits in a war against an alien race that has been going on for decades. Now that Earth is threatened with invasion, Zach and the rest of the gamers must save the world.

The literary critics liked Armada less than Kline's debut novel. However, some reviewers wrote that the book turned out to be quite cinematic, and its plot would look better on large screens. Now Universal Studios, along with producers Dan Pharah (The Chronicles of Shannara) and Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), are ready to put it to the test.
