Last Star Fighter will return to the helm

Image The success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Ready Player One has sparked interest in video game films in Hollywood. Yesterday we reported that Universal has begun work on the adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel Armada about gamer Zack Lightman, who, thanks to his successes in arcade flight simulator, got into the government's program to recruit pilots for the war against an alien race. One of the main sources of inspiration for Kline's work on the book was the film "The Last Star Fighter", which was released in theaters in 1984. As it became known today, the Dream Factory is currently working on its continuation.

The main character of the space opera was schoolboy Alex Rogan, who managed to score a record score in the game Starfighter. Soon, the teenager receives an invitation to travel to the planet of Raylos to sit at the helm of a real spaceship and take part in the battle for the fate of the galaxy. The Last Star Fighter was well received by critics, but failed to recoup its $ 15 million budget. Nevertheless, over the years, Nick Castle's tape has acquired a cult status among moviegoers and gamers.

The first attempt to revive the franchise was made in 2008. It soon emerged that several studios, including Hollywood titans Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., had claims to The Last Star Fighter due to copyright leapfrog. Only a few years later it became known that some of the rights were retained by the author of the plot of the 1984 film, Jonathan R. Bethuel. In 2015, he announced the start of work on the script for a sequel, after which fans of the original film went into standby mode.

The long-awaited news about the fate of the project came from the Twitter of Hollywood screenwriter Gary Witta. The author of the plot of the blockbuster "Rogue One. Star Wars: Tales ”announced that he was helping Bethuel in the work on the script for the picture, and also shared its first concept art. “We already have a well-defined plot of the film on our hands, - admitted Witta. -Our picture can be considered both a sequel and a reboot. We will preserve the legacy of the original, while passing the torch on to a new generation”.

Curiously, in one of his last tweets, Witt mentioned Seth Rogen, who had already made several attempts to acquire the rights to The Last Star Fighter. Seth is a real fan of the Nick Castle film and was inspired by it when creating the popular science fiction series "Man of the Future". It is possible that now the situation with the rights to the 1984 film is finally finally resolved, and Rogen will be able to help Whit and Bethuel in work on its sequel.
