Blade Runner 2049 Receives Anime Prequel

Image Blade Runner will hit the small screens. According to The Hollywood Reporter, 13 episodes of the anime series Blade Runner - Black Lotus are set to air on Adult Swim. Production will be handled by Alcon Entertainment, the studio behind Denis Villeneuve's sequel, and streaming service Crunchyroll, which will handle global distribution.

The animated series, inspired by Blade Runner 2049, will unfold between the events of the two films in 2032. Viewers will see familiar characters from the franchise created by Ridley Scott. Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama, who are currently developing a new Ghost in the Shell anime, will direct all episodes. Shinichiro Watanabe (Samurai Champloo) will take over the production functions. The date of the premiere has not yet been announced.

Adapting anime into game projects is now quite popular: earlier this week, Netflix gave the green light to a series based on the cult space western Cowboy Bebop. The reverse process is much less common, but Blade Runner with its cyberpunk vibe seems like a good candidate for such an experiment.
