Friday Night Lights will get a reboot

Image Buzz Bissinger's book Friday Night Lights, about a football team from a small Texas town, has been adapted for both large and small screens. Both Peter Berg's film with Billy Bob Thornton and the NBC series of the same name were popular with viewers. It would seem that the inspiring story of the Panther team is told inside and out, but Universal has a different opinion on this matter.

As the site Variety managed to find out, the major is preparing a new adaptation of Bissinger's book, and the planned film is not a continuation of the 2004 film or the series with Kyle Chandler, but a full reboot. It is directed by David Gordon Green, best known for the comedies Brave Peppers and The Pineapple Express: Sitting Smoking.

The NBC drama finale aired back in 2011, and even then the bosses of Universal had an idea for a new film adaptation. At some point, the management of the major was thinking about making a sequel to the 2004 film or using Kyle Chandler, who played trainer Eric Taylor in the television Friday Night Lights, in the film. However, the scales tipped towards a story with completely new characters. As in previous versions, the reboot will revolve around a small-town Texas soccer team that dreams of winning the championship.

The script for the new project was written by Robert Shankkan ("For reasons of conscience"). Brian Grazer (Inferno) will take over the production.
