Scar-Free

Image World cinema has presented us with many villains with scars on their faces. Suffice it to recall The Joker from The Dark Knight, Tony Montana from Scarface, Colonel Quaritch from Avatar, Ernst Stavro Blofeld and Le Cipher from the Bond films and, of course, Scar from The Lion King. It seems that these days all these colorful antagonists could lose one of the most important attributes of their appearance. As it became known to The Telegraph, the British Film Institute is ending funding for films in which people with scars are portrayed as villains.

The famous film organization decided to support the #IAmNotYourVillain movement, which appeared on the web thanks to the organization Changing Faces. The charitable foundation has long and successfully provided support to people with scars, burn marks and non-standard birthmarks on their faces. Changing Faces believe that filmmakers have too often portrayed such people as antagonists. As a result, the modern viewer has formed a conditioned reflex: as soon as a character with a scar appears on the screen, they immediately begin to see a villain in him.

When it comes to goodies with scars and burns, filmmakers do their best to embellish their appearance. Next week, the Chronicles of Predatory Cities will be released in USA, which has already been at the center of a serious scandal. The thing is that a deep scar ran through the face of the protagonist of Philip Reeve's novel "Mortal Machines". The scriptwriters kept the consequences of Esther Shaw's trauma to a minimum, so that viewers would more willingly believe in the film's love story. As a result, the picture risks turning one of the key messages of the book upside down and will begin to teach that a person needs to be loved for a pretty appearance, and not for a rich inner world.

In fairness, it should be noted that not all directors and screenwriters tend to make people with marks on their faces villains. At various times, scars adorned Inigo Montoya, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and many other movie characters.
