US Box Office: Monsters Above All
If last week the blockbuster "Rampage" managed to push "A Quiet Place" to the second line of the financial rating, then already last weekend (April 20-22), Dwayne Johnson's charisma did not help the adaptation of the video game, and the thriller by John Krasinski restored the status quo.The leader of the North American box office, like last time, did not break away from his closest pursuer. Thus, the ended weekend brought "Quiet Place" an additional $ 22 million, while "Rampage" raised a little less - $ 21 million. Horror movie John Krasinski now boasts $ 132.4 million, earned in just 17 days. As expected, the tape became Paramount's highest grossing release in the United States since the days of "Star Trek: Infinity". Moreover, very soon "Quiet Place" will surpass the results of the first "Conjuring" and "Split", which during their entire stay at the box office grossed $ 137.4 million and $ 138.2 million, respectively.  If you look at the results of "A Quiet Place" outside of your native cinemas, you are amazed at all - in addition to home fees, the film emptied the wallets of foreign viewers by $ 74.8 million, and earning more than $ 200 million with a small $ 17 million budget - is this not success rate. Not all critics appreciated the efforts of Krasinski and his team, but the great acting of John himself and his wife Emily Blunt, the atmosphere of the post-apocalypse with alien monsters, as well as the rejection of many genre cliches have earned the approval of the audience, judging by the financial indicators.  And although most moviegoers preferred to go to a film session that makes them freeze with fear, there were many who like the salvation of the world and huge monsters a la Godzilla, King Kong and others. Rampage, which has funded an additional $ 21 million, is still no match for A Quiet Place, and the $ 66.6 million is not an impressive achievement for a $ 120 million blockbuster. Fortunately for the filmmakers, Dwayne Johnson has fans outside of The USA is much larger, and they are ready to forgive "Rampage" for some absurdity of the plot. But director Brad Peyton managed to take into account all the preferences of viewers heading to the theaters for entertainment. Here you have the Rock, and giant monsters, and quite bearable special effects. As a result, Rampage has $ 283 million in its piggy bank.  The third position of the top-5 was occupied by the newcomer of the rental, the comedy "Pretty Woman" with Amy Schumer in the title role. The picture started at $ 16.2 million, justifying the expectations placed on it. True, the film still cannot compare with the results of previous films of Sumer: "Girl without complexes" started with $ 30.1 million, and "Her Daughter and Her Mother" - with $ 19.5 million. This is probably due to the wasted potential of Sumer. In "Pretty Woman" she still brings a smile, but flat jokes do not reveal all of Amy's comedic talent. Well, if the main goal of the duet of directors in the person of Abby Cohn and Mark Silverstein was not to make the viewer laugh, but to convey to him the main messages of body positivity, then they frankly failed here too.  The fourth place went to yet another debutant - the sequel to "Super Police", which, unlike the tape with Amy Schumer, managed to surprise distributors. Initially, the comedies predicted a start in the range of $ 5 to $ 6 million, which for a project whose budget was partially raised through crowdfunding would already be a good start. However, the long absence of "Super Cops" on the screens and the presence of loyal fans did their job: the film earned $ 14.7 million in the first weekend. If you take "Exemplary Male 2" or "Escape from Guantanamo" as an example, then the film will end at $ 30. -40 million. The sequel, of course, turned out not as fun as the original, but it will make you laugh. The main thing, according to critics, is to be on the same wavelength with the heroes.  Closing today's review is the horror film Truth or Dare, which added $ 7.9 million to its piggy bank. And although the horror audience is rapidly dwindling, it managed to raise $ 30.4 million in two weeks, many times exceeding its modest budget of $ 3.5 million. The tape, of course, will not become another superhit from the Blumhouse company, but already now its results are comparable to what the projects "Remove from friends" and "Paranormal activity: Mark of the Devil" have achieved.
