Cannes - 2018: old Godard and the change of generations

Image The 71st Cannes International Film Festival will take place this year from 8 to 19 May, and the list of films included in the Main Program was finally announced at a press conference in Paris yesterday.

This year, Cannes will not please moviegoers with an abundance of star names, as it happened in previous years, but the program director of the festival, Thierry Fremault, explained this choice of the contestants by a generational change. At the same time, Jean-Luc Godard, Spike Lee, Asgar Fakhradi and Pavel Pavlikovsky can still be seen on the list of contenders for the main prizes. It was expected that Lars von Trier with his "The House That Jack Built" will be included in the main program, but so far the disgraced director has not been included in the list of contestants, although Fremo, answering journalists' questions, did not rule out that in the near future the list of applicants for awards can be expanded. But the long-awaited "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" by Terry Gilliam will most likely not come to Cannes due to legal differences that arose between the director and producer Paulo Branco.

After last year's scandal with the inclusion of Netflix's Okchi in the Main Program, the online service decided to withdraw from the festival due to the rules according to which films not shown in cinemas in France are not eligible for the competition.

The psychological thriller "Everybody Knows" with Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in the lead roles, also presented in the Main Program, was chosen as the opening film. The poster of the 71st festival is a shot from the drama “Mad Pierrot” by the same Godard. However, it is not the first time that organizers turn to the legendary director for inspiration: in 2016, Cannes's poster referred to Godard's film Contempt.
