Forty Years of Solitude

Image Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershal Ali will shed light on one of the most infamous pages in the history of the American penitentiary system. The Green Book star will assist Fox Searchlight in filming Albert Woodfox's memoir, Single Camera.

In 1971, Woodfox committed an armed robbery and received a 50-year prison sentence in a high security Louisiana colony. Within the walls of the prison, Albert pulled himself together and befriended Black Panther activist Herman Wallace. Despite its notoriety, in those days this radical left organization did a lot of good deeds for prisoners - from organizing training sessions to actively fighting racial segregation and prison violence.

Woodfox and Wallace quickly got into trouble with the colony leadership, who feared politically active prisoners. In 1972, guard Brent Miller was murdered on the territory of the prison. Although the head of the colony did not have any tangible evidence that Albert and Herman could have been involved in the crime, he seized the opportunity and hid them in solitary confinement. As a result, each of the friends spent more than forty years alone, which became an absolute record in the history of the US penitentiary system.

Mahershala has so far been assigned to the prison drama only as an executive producer. Nevertheless, insiders do not exclude that he will subsequently revise the current contract and sign up for one of the main roles.
