Top 250. The Big Lebowski Strike

Image The star of the world's best double-headed director lit up in 1991. 44th Cannes Film Festival : more tickets for the film "In Bed with Madonna" by Alec Keshishian than the cinema hall can hold. Lars von Trier has high hopes for his intellectual aesthetic "Europe". But the jury, headed by Roman Polanski, makes its choice: the Dane receives only minor awards (after which he calls Polanski a dwarf at the banquet), and the main prize goes to Barton Fink, a black comedy about Hollywood manners 40 x.

The filmmakers, Joel and Ethan Coens brothers, are the exact opposite of Trier . The Coens are cheerful Americans with kind smiles, who deftly exploit the forms of mass cinema. " Barton Fink " charmed the viewer by showing the world from inside a typewriter.

Around the same time, the Coens were having fun writing a script for another tape - an optional, at first glance, gizmo called "The Big Lebowski ". The picture was released in 1998 and gave the brotherly duo the final recognition of the general public. " The Big Lebowski " charmed the viewer by showing the world from inside a bowling ball.

In the early 90's in Los Angeles there was a man nicknamed Dude (Jeff Bridges), who was probably the laziest inhabitant of the city. We are informed about this at the beginning of the film by the voice of an elderly narrator. Dude lives as a Taoist: drinks a cocktail "White USA", smokes pot and plays bowling with friends - the hot-tempered Vietnam veteran Walter (John Goodman) and the idiot Donnie (Steve Buscemi).

On one of these serene evenings, the local pornographer Jackie Trichorn (Ben Gazzara) rushed to the Dude , who had been a bachelor all his life, demanding to pay back the debts of his porn actress wife (Tara Reed) ... As a threat, Trichorn's colleague urinated on Dude 's carpet. It turned out that the bandits confused the namesakes: they needed an elderly millionaire Lebowski (David Huddleston), and they came to a middle-aged stump, from which there is nothing to ask. Insulted by the carpet trick that (importantly) "style the whole room", Dude goes to the big Lebowski for damages.

This film belongs to those about which one can say in the words of Mark Twain:"Persons who try to find a plot in it will be shot". "Lebowski" is a two-hour booth and a melting pot of everything that mankind has filmed before it: thriller, musical, black comedy, westerns are huddled here. The seventh painting of the Coen brothers is almost in opposition to their previous work, a sample of Cohen's minimalism “ Fargo ”. " Lebowski " is satiated with colors, images, sounds, discord of eras, minor characters, references to world culture and the word "fuck" (281 times per film). And this, in general, is a great holiday for any moviegoer, but on the other hand,

When pondering the details of the upcoming film, Joel and Ethan were inspired by one of their favorite writers - Raymond Chandler . Actually, his detective story " Deep Sleep " can be considered with great assumptions the basis of the plot of " The Big Lebowski ". The Coens wrote the script under John Goodman and Steve Buscemi , not knowing who would be cast as Dude . When it was time for filming, Bridges and Goodman were busy with other projects, so the " The Big Lebowski " had to be postponed and given up in line with " Fargo ".

The flawlessly played heroes Bridges and Goodman - Dude and Walter Sobchak - are written off from real prototypes and are designed to show what what the 60s led: both to the lazy Zen of the former hippies, and to the comical ultramilitarism of the former soldiers. Steve Buscemi played his character in contrast: Donnie do not give a word, while the character he played has Carl from Fargo ”the mouth did not close. But the best role in " Lebowski " certainly belongs to the genius John Turturro. He appears in the picture for a few minutes, but his "Spanish homosexual" Jesus Quintana , licking a bowling ball before throwing, is a real name day of hearts.

Bowling is a separate topic for conversation about the picture. The Coens wanted to add the entourage of bygone days: “Bowling provided a retro component of the film, a kind of anachronism that takes us into a not so distant era, but, nevertheless, irrevocably gone". For the heroes, this game is almost the meaning of life. Rivalry with the aggressive pervert Quintana is a matter of honor.

" The Big Lebowski " is called the first cult movie of the Internet age. Iconic is when we, the viewers, think about the picture much more than the creators thought; when the movie mutates and starts living its own life off-screen. Since 2002, the USA has hosted the Lebowski festival: fans of the tape come to play bowling, drink "White USA", meet their own kind - is not the new Woodstock ? Well, where without religion: dudeism ("dude" - dude) involves following the principles of Jeffrey Lebowski , that is, an unconscious mix of different teachings - from Eastern meditations to Christianity.

The Big Lebowski was greeted by critics rather cool at first. The only major film award that he received is the USA " Golden Aries " (ceased to exist since 2006) in the nomination "Best Foreign Film", which in itself seems to be a continuation of the script by the Coen brothers. But the main thing is not criticism, but a non-growing folk path: perhaps, together with "Pulp Fiction", " The Big Lebowski " composes a magnificent filmodiptych under the code name " Nineties ". It will go down in history.
