Few cult writers can boast of good film adaptations of their books. Some, probably, toss and turn in their coffins so that they dug up their graveyards. William Faulkner, for example, simply banned the adaptation of some of his novels.

But there is at least one author who can't complain about Hollywood. As everyone probably already guessed - this is Stephen King. The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption, Stay With Me, Misery, Carrie are far from the end of the list. And now we are going to the dark and at the same time light world of one of the novels of the King of Horrors . The Green Mile awaits us.

A resident of a nursing home, a former prison guard Paul Edgecomb , talks to his elderly friend Elaine about working in the prison. 1935, a federal prison with the beautiful name "Cold Mountain" in the state of Louisiana. Block E contains prisoners who are awaiting execution by electric chair. The floor on which they are being led to execution is painted green. And that's why block E is called the Green Mile. A huge African American John Coffey arrives at the prison, sentenced to death for the rape and murder of two girls. A little later, the killer of Bill Wharton , nicknamed Wild Bill , is brought there.

Strangeness begins: it turns out that John Coffey has supernatural powers. He cures Edgecomb from an unpleasant infection and revives the trampled mouse. Edgecomb begins to doubt his guilt. But this time no one will be able to bypass the system ... This is The Green Mile .

“My name is John Coffey . Like a drink, only it is spelled differently. ”

The novel of the same name was released in 1996, and King's friend, director Frank Darabont, traditionally bought the rights to the film adaptation. In 1998, Darabont wrote the script in eight weeks and began filming at Warner Brothers . Both Stephen and Frank have agreed on Tom Hanks for the role of Paul Edgecomb . The role of the overseer Brutus Howell , nicknamed The Beast , was offered to actor David Morse, who, he says, cried after reading the script. James Cromwell was the only candidate for the role of Hal Moors Prison Chief. According to legend, Michael Clarke Duncan got the role of John Coffey under the patronage of Bruce Willis.

Several other great actors played in the film: Sam Rockwell, Patricia Clarkson, Gary Sinise and the cult figure of American culture, actor, singer and World War II veteran - Harry Dean Stanton (as the old janitor Tu-tu ).

The operator was David Tattersall. Composer Thomas Newman, who wrote the beautiful soundtrack for The Shawshank Redemption , has worked with Darabont again. Filming took place at Warner Brothers and in southern states - Tennessee and North Carolina.

This time, Darabont didn't waste time on trifles and made a $ 60 million film. The Green Mile has doubled its budget, grossing over $ 120 million at the box office. Academy Awards nominated her for four Oscars - Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor ( Michael Clarke Duncan ), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound ". The film won nothing, but earned the endless love of the audience.

Unlike The Shawshank Redemption , which was effectively a two-actor theater, The Green Mile has a stronger caste. The second shot also turned out to be brighter: the absolutely brilliant Sam Rockwell as Wild Bill , the small but memorable appearance of Harry Dean Stanton , the charming Patricia Clarkson as the wife of the warden of Melinda Moores , as well as of course the amazing work of Michael Clarke Duncan .

An old American story - a black man in the American South is always guilty. But it's not all bad: if a black man can save a white woman from death, his skin color becomes unimportant. John , thanks to his paranormal abilities, heals Mrs. Moores . And then a group of guards decides to save him from the death penalty, especially since there were other good reasons for that. And it would seem that now the system will again be punished for its mistakes ... But John is tired. He asks to let him die. You can bypass the system, but you cannot fool yourself.

“I'm so tired of the pain I hear and feel, boss. I'm tired of the roads, tired of being alone, like a sparrow in the rain. I'm tired of the fact that I will never share a company with anyone and say where and why we are going. I'm tired of people hating each other. It looks like shards of glass in the brain. I'm tired of wanting to help so many times and not being able to. I'm tired of the dark. But most of all - from pain ". This time the wonderful storytellers King and Darabont did not show us the ocean and freedom.

There is no moral to this story. King such things are of little concern. If you want to learn something, learn yourself. In my experience and my mistakes. We were simply told a story that, on the one hand, can be upsetting, but on the other, we again saw that the world is not as bad as it seems in dark moments. People remain people even in prison. Even when they have to walk the Green Mile . In addition, one woman and one mouse got a second chance.

“I saw his heart when he took my hand. I saw what he did. I saw it very clearly. It is impossible to hide what is in your heart. ”.
