The Long Walk with King

Image The success of the horror film "It" prompted many Hollywood studios to take on the adaptation of other works by Stephen King. Paramount is preparing a new Pet Sematary, Universal wants to meet the Tomminokers, but New Line, which has brought Pennywise and the Losers' Club back to the screens, does not want to stay away. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the major decided to adapt King's novel The Long Walk.

The original was written by the King of Horrors back in 1966, but for a long time, King could not get it published. The book was published only in 1979 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Its action takes place in the not too distant future, when America has become a police state. Every year, a hundred young men are rigorously selected to take part in a competition called the Long Walk. Its rules are simple - don't stop and go at least four miles per hour. Otherwise, you receive a warning, and when there are three of them, you will be shot. Out of a hundred participants, only one will make it to the finish line alive, and he will receive the main prize - everything he wishes for the rest of his days.

The idea for the film adaptation belongs to James Vanderbilt, who has worked in a variety of genres during his career. He is the author of the screenplay for Fincher's Zodiac, the action movie Storming the White House, The Amazing Spider-Man and the sequel to Independence Day.

For a long time, the rights to "The Long Walk" belonged to Frank Darabont, who directed "Mist", "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption", and the filmmaker was even going to transfer the novel to screens. Vanderbilt, in turn, wrote the script application for "Long Walk" without copyright, and when Darabont lost them, his colleague in the shop immediately went with his idea to the bosses of New Line.
