It's not for nothing that when any fin appears above the water, most people now rush to thresh with their hands and feet in the water in frantic attempts to get to the shore as quickly as possible. This is not just the fear of death, which prompts one to be afraid of sharks, but rather the horror of their appearance and unpredictability, how menacingly they glide in transparent waters, how pale their eyes seem. "The Shallows" is another attempt to play enough with these fears and at the same time pretty much spoil some summer holidays at sea.

Thrillers about bloodthirsty sharks eating people for nothing seemed to have realized their full potential in one single movie by Steven Spielberg "Jaws", which is considered not only the classics of world cinema, but also the standard of such a formed "shark" genre. Fortunately, The Shallow offers a completely new, modern and exciting perspective on the fear of being eaten alive. This is a movie full of drive and lightness, surprisingly well adjacent to the toothy, hair-lifting tension, generously distributed throughout the picture except for the first twenty minutes.

Scriptwriter Anthony Jazvinsky begins the story with a rather lazy acquaintance of the viewer with the heroine Blake Lively. In the photos that pop up on the screen from the abyss of the Internet, you can meet her family, immediately find out that her friend will not join the fight against the shark because of a contrived cold, and the secret beach she arrives at is called paradise. Unfortunately, movies about sharks cannot do without pretentious drama, take a look at "Shark Tornado".

It's just movieed a relaxed introduction gives time to properly explore the beauty of Blake Lively and imbued with her good aspirations, so that in the aftermath of her life she would like to desperately clench her fists. To Lively's credit, it is worth noting that she turns out to play quiet scenes with the same invisible practicality of life, as well as life-and-death fights with a sea monster. Of course, she does not succeed in getting lost in the character, so you are sick with all your heart rather for Ryan Reynolds' wife than for Nancy, but here, as they say, there would be something to get lost in.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra is not delays the first act, realizing that it is flat, like a surfboard, but according to all the script laws it is necessary. Collet Serra is very respectful of all the cinematic laws, so "Shallow" is cheap, but a very well-made movie. As soon as the action gets to the stumbling block, from which the heroine Lively has to escape, he comes to life and begins to move in a constantly intriguing manner, comparable to such an adventure of one hero as "Gravity".

"The Shoal" no doubt implemented on a much smaller scale, but it only plays into the hands of Collet-Serre, an expert on confined spaces, for which the perfect example of "Air Marshal" with Liam Neeson. Collet Serra is not only good at maintaining suspense, but also at choosing frames that give the picture an epic scale even in tight spaces.

Blake Lively turned out to be a very convincing action heroine, adventurous, brave and at the same time humanly vulnerable. The creators do not give her superhero qualities, thereby allowing the viewer to empathize with her. In addition, Lively, in the absence of any major supporting roles in The Shallows, drags on the entire movie, turning it into his own benefit performance. And various variations of sighs and gasps flying from her lips can serve as a pretext for both admiring fantasies and kind ridicule.

The main villain of the picture, the shark, was also spared no expense. Fear has never looked so realistic, which undoubtedly helps the overall tension of the picture. The movie easily admits, but as soon as it tightens its grip, it is almost impossible to break free to the very end. Thus, Jaume Collet-Serra,
