Review of the movie Chappy the Robot. Unlimited faith in the future

The main problem of the movie `` Robot named Chappy '' lies in the fact that he would have to kill on the fall, and instead, at best, gives a faint click on the forehead. Not so expected from the director of District 9 Neil Blomkamp, and the fact that he could not even get close to the success of his debut project says something. Plus “ A Robot Called Chappy ” turned out to be his most vague and weak work at the moment. So what is the fate of the continuation of the “ Alien ” becomes truly anxious.

The reason for the anxiety is rather simple: it seems that Blomcamp is unable to go beyond the social context of his movies. His fascination with the problems of Africa (and to some extent the rest of the world) played a cruel joke: what at first was considered a breath of fresh air has turned into ridicule with which the Internet is thrown. “ A Robot Called Chappy ” only added fuel to the fire. No joke, he is fundamentally raising the same problems that he asked in 2009 `` District # 9 ''. On the one hand, the powers that be of this world have never bothered to bring the gap between the rich and the poor closer. On the other hand, I'm already tired of looking at it.

“ A Robot Called Chappy ” talks about a robot policeman who is kidnapped by intruders in order to reprogram it to fit their needs. As a result, Chappie turns out to be in many ways more human than people themselves. Hugh Jackman, for example, plays a very addicted villain with a completely idiotic haircut. Sigourney Weaver, who got the role originally written for a man, somewhat reminiscent of Jodie Foster from Elysium. However, when you can clearly see how Weaver is struggling to be cool and strong, it becomes somehow completely uncomfortable and sad.

Dev Patel is very different from them in this regard. It is very natural on the screen. He doesn't seem to need to play anything. He is charming and kind as always. It is completely unclear why Blomkamp invited the South African group Die Antwoord to the picture, since their acting is – it's just something served raw and untalented. Well, the fact that nothing came from Sharlto Copley to Chappy himself was so clear.

But the visual skill of Blomkamp himself and his team is once again amazing. They managed to make Chappie not only cute, but also showing a full range of human emotions that are understandable without any words. Its design is an outstanding achievement in itself: it costs a lot to create a robot on the screen that behaves like a human and which you can empathize with as a human. Especially in a movie like this, where the viewer's perception of Chappy plays a huge role in the emotional saturation of the picture.

Blomcamp's mistake is rather that he could not bring the story to a decent level that could evoke emotion. Mostly “ A Robot Called Chappy ” came out too awkward and small. There was not enough budget for the epic, but for the drama of mastery.

Otherwise, the movie is directly cute. The script suggests a few jokes, although the comedy “ Chappy the Robot ” you will never name. There are some not-so-impressive action scenes (and one quite impressive) with Blomcamp's trademark directing tricks. Well, he loves slow motion, what can you do! There is drama (as already noted, with a deep social bias). And there are some very strange moments when gangsters teach Chappie their manners, which cause a rare all-encompassing feeling popularly called `` laugh through tears. ''

There is nothing else. That “ A Robot Called Chappy ” cannot be surprised, this is one problem. The fact that he does not provoke almost any emotion is a much more serious problem. Because Blomkamp could be forgiven for trying to create something new, even if it did not work out to the end, but it is impossible to forgive him for a mediocre movie, repetitive and confusing.
