What Gilroy lacks is the love he shows for the city. If Scorsese has it, then here Los Angeles remains cold and impersonal. However, it must be admitted that it fits very well into the general atmosphere of the movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal creates magic on the screen. His crazy mesmerizing acting intrigues immediately, he literally attracts attention. If his weight loss (which, by the way, he insisted on himself) was caused by the unbridled thirst for Oscar, then he skillfully transferred this very thirst to his character on the screen. Louis is an unpleasant type, but Gyllenhaal manages to make him more or less understandable, to reveal him as a victim of the modern world and people, one way or another ruling them. Rene Russo, playing in a sense the boss of the protagonist, just perfectly showed how two-faced such people can be.
"Stringer" constantly balancing on the edge between thriller and drama. For the first, he is very thoughtful, for the second, surprisingly intense. And this reflects to some extent the realities of today's news world. You never know how many reports on TV were movieed by people like Louis. Gilroy juggles various problems of modern society, testing the viewer and perplexing them.
