Long before the beginning of the 21st century, two highly respected creators, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, showed studio bosses all the delights of blockbusters, and they have since been very reluctant to fork out for movies like Three Nines. Actually, why is it not difficult to understand, because for every “ City of Thieves ” there is such a juicy, rather insipid and pseudo-intellectual cinema, badly entertaining, but having a very high opinion of itself. It could be anything from a flamboyant showcase of cast talent to director John Hillcote's meager hope of becoming the new David Ayer, but it's definitely not a movie aimed at the general public.
The cop story was written. up and down already dozens, if not hundreds of times. Recently, therefore, it is customary to draw the attention of viewers from gray office spaces to the interpersonal friction of characters. The latter are present in the “ Three Nines ” in large numbers, but the set of heroes in the action movie turned out to be so standard and pale that it becomes extremely difficult to get someone to sympathize with Hillcoat. Contrary to the fantastic acting work of everyone from Casey Affleck to Woody Harrelson. Kate Winslet generally becomes an independent character, although her role is small and she is not playing the villainess for the first time. It is Winslet's role that is most alluring, and she plays it with such dedication that it becomes a pleasure to watch.
Against the background of Winslet's red suit, all the others are noticeably lost (and this is not only about the color of clothes). There is simply no budget to compensate for the inarticulateness of the script with exciting action scenes. After the movie opens with a mesmerizing robbery scene that combines all the elements that the rest of the narrative is so lacking (visually mesmerizing shots, suspense and clever script), the tension inevitably falls like a stone. At what Hillcoat, hardened by `` The drunkest district in the world '', tries to put pressure on the psyche of the audience not so much with shootings as with a heavy atmosphere and whole excerpts from the classics of cinema. For example, in the middle of the movie there is a fascinating scene of the arrest of a criminal, instantly recalling the ending of Silence of the Lambs, but goosebumps run more from the memory of the character of Jodie Foster than from Casey Affleck, who runs around with a pistol. Hillcoat cannot improve the famous scene, thus making him miss her.
This is how the entire viewing time proceeds. The movie seems to be drawn out even though it is less than two hours long; superficial, despite the relationship that seems so twisted; boring, even if there are scenes that are perfectly shot and attract to the screen. This is not so much the fault of the creators. One cannot even deny the delicacy of individual dialogues. However, the genre of the movie itself does not fit into the concept of what you want to see on the big screen. This is home cinema, relaxed and unimportant. The attempt to make something more out of him failed miserably. This is not a nerve-tickling “ Black Mass ” and not an exclusive drama like “ Patrol ” Eira.
If such movies disappear from cinemas, as Spielberg predicts, no one will ask to return them back. It will only be a pity for all those followers of the `` French Messenger '' who will be ditched by failures like the `` Three nines ''. If we are to tackle serious, uncompromising, art-house cinema, then we must pursue a similar goal to the end, and not abandon it in the middle. Hillcoat didn't have the courage, or he was just turned up halfway by people in black suits.
That's why the movie is so sterile. He absolutely does not hold attention, does not force one to listen or peer. “ Three nines ” - this movie is not needed by anyone except the creators. Hillcoat may now get a bigger and more meaningful project. Actors will fill resumes with strong dramatic roles, which will give them studio attention. But the viewer will remain where he was, only this time with a huge prejudice to all subsequent similar pictures.
