"Pete and his dragon" is difficult to describe in words, except if expressed in the definition of the hero Robert Redford and call it absolute, tangible magic. Director David Lowry not only immerses you in history, he allows you to look at the ordinary world outside the cinema with completely different eyes. He allows him to believe that, contrary to all generally known facts, somewhere in the forest there can really be a charming green dragon, and you should look around just a little more closely to see its long thick tail barely peeking out of the trees.

A fairly standard story about an orphan who lost his parents, about a boy and his pet, about a rascal who did not want to grow up, about a savage for whom nature is his home, turns into something both familiar and nostalgically sensual in the hands of Lowry and his script partner Toby Halbrooks. "Pete and His Dragon" carries the spirit of the best family movies of the last century, blending in one bottle a modern take on history with the charm of old songs and the atmosphere of a small town in the North America. This makes the movie surprisingly, unexpectedly touching, beyond even the predictable outcome.

Pete and his relationship with the dragon Eliot are tender and beautiful. You instantly fall in love with this crazy forest couple, from the scene of their meeting, which takes place in a corresponding dramatically romantic setting. The design of the lop-eared, clumsy dragon was clearly based on observation of dogs and their behavior. In addition to the generated cliches like chasing your own tail or playing with the automatic lawn watering device, Eliot was given many more subtle characteristics of pets. The way he loyally and sensitively looks into Pete's eyes breaks all barriers on the way to the audience's hearts, so it becomes simply impossible not to enjoy the dynamics of the relationship between the dragon and the boy, even after the sudden death of the latter's parents.

Lowry is not afraid to touch on serious topics in this unobtrusively childish movie. Instead, he plays them with great skill, often hinting clearly at his origins as a director of independent indie movies, while at the same time not trying to scare the small audience. Even the most tragic moments are served by Pete's sweetened childish sensibility, therefore, you should not be afraid to take even the smallest children into the gym.

At the same time, Lowry gets rid of the seriousness, which is initially adjusted by the camera work of Boyan Baselli, who prefers faded shades and deep shadows. In fact, "Pete and His Dragon" is a very funny movie that does not disdain the well-known techniques to please children of all ages. There is also a snotty bunch of villains led by Karl Urban, fleeing with all their might from the dragon with cartoon shouts and stumbling. There is a wise narrator in the form of Robert Redford hiding behind glasses, who looks like a mysterious magician more than ever, who knows more than everyone else put together. There is also a certain romanticization of the plot about a boy who lost everything, but remained brave in the most terrible conditions. It never does without traditional Disney morality.

But with all this, "Pete and His Dragon" remains serious and exciting. Lowry never flirts with his audience, does not try to adapt to young minds. He relies on the ingenuity and attentiveness of his audience, which often distinguishes an ordinary entertaining dummy from a deeper adventure that does not need an apology or excuse. Pete and His Dragon is without a doubt the latter.

Even in the absence of any scale or excessive fantasy brilliance, the movie is exciting. Of course, anyone who occasionally wanders into the theater can predict all the twists and turns of an ingenious plot from start to finish, but the enthusiasm with which Lowry approaches work, his ability to find something exciting in the most ordinary scenes, relieves "Pete and His Dragon" from all boredom. One character interaction with a dragon fills the soul with more joy than a million cute cat videos on YouTube, so there is no need to talk about dizzying flying in 3D.

Actors deserve applause, if only for the fact that they so convincingly and unnoticed contact with the hero, completely created using computer graphics. Oaks Fegley and Una Lawrence make an unforgettable experience. Fegley, who plays Pete, doesn't have a lot of lines in the movie, but his facial expression and a simple but succinct "Eliot!" sometimes contains more than all the long dialogues of other characters.

This was especially true with the heroine Bryce Dallas Howard, who exudes positive energy with all her essence, covering her entire movie like a duvet with warmth and cozy. However, despite the fact that she does very little in the movie, there is a lot of her on the screen, which at some stage may seem extremely irritating. And yet, somehow, she quite organically fits into the atmosphere of the entire movie, creating a truly heartfelt heroine without embellishment and imposed heroism.
