Review of the movie The Incredible Life of Walter Mitty. The humble man's crazy journey

I will immediately outline the bar of the movie: " The Incredible Life of Walter Mitty " - an incredibly inspirational, cute, a bit fabulous start to 2014 movie-year and the best movie by Ben Stiller.

Tape - a remake of the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty 1947 based on the prose by American James Thurber. The idea for this remake originated in the bowels of Hollywood. back in 1994 and for almost 2 decades she changed hands, changing studios, producers, directors, actors with the most famous names. Until she finally settled in the summer of 2011 with Ben Stiller as director and leading actor. As you know, smiling happily in the finale, this choice was blessed from above.

The name of Stiller, actor and director, is strongly associated with comedy. A comedy for the most part, unpretentious, sometimes crude and somewhat primitive, sometimes completely black (Exemplary Male, Everyone's Crazy About Mary, Soldiers of Failure). In his creative experiments, he takes a risky approach to the line that separates the really funny from the clumsy and banal, but does not cross it, like, for example, Adam Sandler. However, I never forget his few but successful dramas - Reality Bites (Ben director and actor) Keeping the Faith (directed by Edward Norton, Ben is one of the three main characters), " Greenberg " (directed by Noah Baumbach, starring Ben). In these tapes, drama is combined with rock and sitcom, which makes them very vital and lyrical. Stiller added this lyrical touching accent to his new work, The Incredible Life of Walter Mitty.

Walter Mitty works modestly and comfortably in the photo department of Life magazine, going through the masterpieces taken by the most risky and gambling photojournalists — a volcanic eruption in Iceland from the wing of an airplane, a painfully tracked snow leopard somewhere high in the Himalayas. Excitement, however, does not stick to him, he lives the measured life of a `` bookkeeper '', a couch potato, like a caring son and brother taking care of his mother and sister. He would be completely dull if it were not for the rich, vivid, heroic and noble fantasies that often and unexpectedly take him to the parallel astral world.

One fine day life, the same life, playing with all colors, to which his native magazine is devoted, gets him to the full — he is on the verge of dismissal due to the closure of the publication, moreover, he lost a valuable photo for the cover of the last issue, and even fell in love with a new employee. From that moment on, at first he carefully, like tasting water, and then decisively forced to open a new page in his biography, new facets of his character and even a craving for reckless events. In search of the lost photo and its author Sean O'Connell (Sean Penn), he repeats the difficult routes of his idol, a travel photojournalist, and overcomes kilometers of distances by plane, car, ship, bicycle, skateboard, on foot. And along with the kilometers leaves behind his own uncertainty and inertia.

Stiller-actor is impeccable, such a rich in nuances of the game was not in his movieography. Other roles are played by popular big-screen and TV series actors and even great professionals (Kristen Wiig, Shirley McLane, Sean Penn, Adam Scott). Sean Penn looks so weighty and monumental in the cameo that he could pull the blanket over himself a little more. The movie gracefully balances on the verge of comedy, drama, fantasy, adventure, not for a minute slipping into a farce, not only thanks to plot twists, but also thanks to talent, irony, humor, rare positiveness and `` openness '' the entire cast. Many of the episodes are good and impressive as standalone gags. I dare not retell in order to avoid spoilers, but I cannot help but mention here Stiller's excellent duet with the colorful Icelandic actor Olafur Darry Olasson, a two-meter `` mountain man '', in the role of a helicopter pilot, a new `` fearless '' begins with their colorful communication period in Mitty's life.

Very nice picture. The storyline itself is far from boring, but combined with gorgeous scenery (cinematographer Stuart Dryberg) — incredible mountains, glaciers, fantastic sunsets, Greenland, Iceland, the Himalayas — the story becomes a spectacular fascinating journey, in which there is enough light drama, romance, all shades of humor, good action and just beauty. Reality and fantasy are closely intertwined in Walter Mitty's head and it is just as difficult to distinguish them on the screen.

The lightness, simplicity, warmth and rare optimism of the picture give a festive good mood. The slogan and message of the movie: challenge yourself, live in the here and now, have the courage to overcome the routine and enjoy the moment. Let's reboot our self for the next year with Ben Stiller and his company!
