Dolby, the world-renowned developer of sound standards, is expanding into the IMAX-dominated large screen market.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company unveiled the Dolby Cinema project, which offers, in addition to the large screen, a number of other unique elements. For example, the electronic "branding" of the entrance to the cinema, which will be performed in the style of the movie being shown at the moment. All halls will be equipped with the latest Dolby Atmos sound system.

But the key element will be the next generation of Christie 6P 4K laser projectors, featuring "high dynamic range" technology, which far exceeds standard brightness. The first Dolby Cinema will open in December 2014 in the Netherlands. Dolby has previously held test screenings in Los Angeles for professional moviemakers.

In the future, Dolby promises to work with partners according to the following scheme: the company pays for projection systems, and the owners of cinemas at their own expense make the refurbishment and necessary modernization of the halls.

Note that IMAX also intends to implement laser projection systems in its halls.
