First Oscars awarded in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, a gala reception was held by the Governing Council of the American Film Academy, at which, according to tradition, honorary Oscars are presented. In 2012, stuntman and director Hal Needham, documentary moviemaker D .AND. Pennebaker and popularizer and movie historian George Stephens Jr. DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg won the Gene Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Many Hollywood celebrities attended the ceremony, including Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Will Smith, Kristen Stewart, Warren Beatty, Helen Hunt and others.
