The History Channel has commissioned the production of the fifth season of the popular historical drama Vikings, which will premiere in 2017. Jonathan Reese Meyers ("The Tudors") will join the cast for the upcoming season. Details regarding his role were not disclosed. Production of the fifth season, which has twenty episodes, will begin this summer. This is reported by Deadline.

Role in Vikings brings Meyers back to History Channel, where he will star in the upcoming mini-series Roots. His participation will "close the gap" with Clive Standen's departure after season four in the upcoming NBC series "The Hostage," in which he has been confirmed for the lead role. According to rumors, Standen's character Rollo will not be killed, so there is a possibility that the actor will also make a guest appearance in the fifth season.

The Vikings family adventure saga, created by Michael Hirst, is the channel's only original scripted series. Taking into account the three days after the broadcast, the series attracts an average of 4.2 million viewers, of which 2.1 million viewers are from 25 to 54 years old, and 1.9 million -; from 18 to 49 years old. The remaining ten of the twenty episodes of Season 4 will air later this year.
