Netflix renews Marseille's political drama for a second season

Netflix has commissioned the production of the second season of the French political series Marseille, starring Gerard Depardieu. The streaming service posted its decision on Twitter, leaving a message in French: “The fight is not over.”

Depardieu's episode, in which Depardieu plays a corrupt politician at the center of a power struggle with his former protege, received a devastating criticism that followed after his debut in France in May this year. After the premiere of two episodes on French public channel TF1 (as part of an agreement with Netflix), the drama received negative reviews.

Considering all of the above, Netflix is in no hurry to release ratings, and it remains only to wait for which series will gain popularity exclusively on streaming service. For Netflix's executive producers, Marseille, the first series in French, is a matter of prestige and monetary value.

The eight-episode show was created by French playwright and screenwriter Dan Frank (Carlos). Among the directors of the television project are Florent Emilio Siri ("Hostage"), Xavier Gens ("Hitman") and Cedric Angers ("Next time I'll shoot in the heart"). The second major male role is played by Benoit Magimel ("The Pianist"). Geraldine Paya (Don Juan de Marco) and Nadia Fares (Crimson Rivers) also starred alongside Depardieu, whose performance was criticized unlike the dialogues.
