Celebrity French actor Gerard Depardieu has been cast as the lead male lead on Netflix's "Marseille" series. The upcoming series, which has been likened to House of Cards, will be Netflix's first French original TV show. The management of the video service officially announced the appointment of Depardieu to the role of the leading actor on July 10, 2015 after the completion of negotiations, which had been going on since May of this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Marseille" will debut in early 2016, although the series was originally supposed to launch in late 2015.

The series, which will be movieed entirely in France, will feature Robert Tarot (Depardieu) serving as mayor of the city for twenty-five years. In the upcoming elections, Tarot will compete with his ambitious young successor. His role will be played by Benoit Magimel ("The Pianist").

Other leading actors include Geraldine Palehs ("Don Juan de Marco") and Nadia Fares ("Crimson Rivers").

The eight-part drama was created and written by Dan Frank, co-writer for the biographical mini-series "Carlos", winner of the 2011 Golden Globe. Florent Emilio Siri (My Way), Xavier Gens (The Hitman) and Cedric Angers (Next Time I'll Shoot in the Heart) are announced to be directors of "Marseille".
