Paramount Television will direct the dramatic comedy "Bettyville," starring Oscar-winning Shirley McLaine ("The Tongue of Tenderness") and Tony-winning Matthew Broderick ("Godzilla"). Based on the bestselling book of the same name by journalist George Hodgman, the screenplay will be written by John Hoffman ("Grace and Frankie"), who will also take over as showrunner. The series, which will be movieed in Santa Fe, will be co-executive produced by Hoffman, Anne Carey and Amy Naujokas ("Diary of a Teenage Girl"). This is reported by Deadline.

"Bettyville" follows George Hodgman (Broderick) leaving Manhattan to visit his aging mother Betty (McLaine) in his native Paris, Missouri. Life interferes with George's plans to stay in the city for only a couple of weeks and makes him linger, armed, no less, by tenacity, a past to be dealt with, and surrounded by two irritable personalities – by himself and his mother Betty. Fun and moving flashbacks describe the relationship between mother and son, family secrets and the like.

"Paramount TV is in the safe hands of Shirley McLaine and Matthew Broderick, two incredible talents who know how to marry a comedy with drama as they are at the center of this fantastic story, "Paramount TV CEO Amy Powell said in a statement." We look forward to bringing these complex and compelling characters to life.
