Black Panther director declined to join Film Academy

American director Ryan Coogler, who directed Creed: The Rocky Legacy, and at the time of this writing, is the director of Black Panther based on Marvel comics, has not accepted an offer to become an Academy Fellow. The Hollywood Reporter reports this with reference to its sources.

Recall that in June 2016 it was announced that the Film Academy is ready to accept about 700 new members, including Cary Fukunaga, as well as Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan and many other black moviemakers. According to the organization's management, this will "increase the variety of decisions made."

The desire for "diversity" was voiced by the leadership of the Kioacademy after the scandal that happened before the Oscars 2016. Then some black artists expressed their outrage that all the nominees for the most prestigious award were white. Some moviemakers even called for a boycott of the ceremony.

In response, the head of the Film Academy, Sherryl Boone Isaacs, announced an ambitious reform program, which in turn caused a mixed reaction in Hollywood. As for Ryan Coogler, sources close to him say his refusal to become a member of the Film Academy is not a protest.
