China box office jumped 50 percent

In the first month of 2016, the cumulative box office receipts of movies in the Chinese box office rose nearly 50 percent from a year ago. And this despite the fact that, as noted by The Hollywood Reportet, January is traditionally considered not the most efficient "rolling window" in China.

The share of Hollywood movie production continued to decline, despite the premiere of such a significant project as "Star Wars: Episode 7 - The Force Awakens", and amounted to about 29 percent of the total amount of 583 million dollars. It is worth noting that the seventh episode of the popular space saga, at the time of this writing, has earned less in China than the locally produced movie "Detective Chinatown".

Let us remind you that the Chinese box office shows steady growth every year. In 2015, the box office came close to $ 7 billion. Foreign movie quotas and support from the domestic movie industry enable Chinese-made movies to compete effectively with major Hollywood blockbusters. So, if in 2014 the share of foreign movies was 45.5 percent, then in 2015 it dropped to 38 percent.

It is expected that by the end of 2017 the Chinese box office will be on par with the North American one.
