Cumulative box office gross for movies released in China in 2015 increased 49 percent from 2014. This is reported by the Variety edition with reference to the state administration that regulates the activities of the media, movie industry and television.

In absolute terms, the Chinese ox-office reached 44 billion yuan, or $ 6.7 billion. The highest grossing movie of the year in China was the action adventure Fast and Furious 7, which grossed $ 390 million. The locally produced paintings Monster Hunt and Adventure in Hong Kong grossed $ 381 million and $ 253 million, respectively.

Chinese movies have maintained a dominant position in the national box office, accounting for over 61 percent of the total box office gross. Overall, earnings from Chinese movie projects rose 67 percent over the year, from 16 billion yuan to 27 billion yuan.

The number of cinemas increased over the year by a third from 23,600 in 2014 to 31,627 in 2015. On average, 22 new halls were opened per day.

According to experts' forecasts, the Chinese movie market will catch up with the American one already in 2017, so the success there for Hollywood movie production remains a priority. Many of the major projects are now movieed in partnership with Chinese companies and studios.
