The Chinese movie market has officially become the largest in the world. According to the Global Times, citing data from the State Statistical Office, there are now 40,917 cinemas in China, that is, almost 200 more than in North America, which has maintained its leading position until that moment. During 2016, about 25 new cinemas opened daily in China, 85 percent of them were equipped with modern stereoscopic projection systems and advanced sound systems. However, the explosive growth in box office sales in China in 2016 slowed down significantly. So, if a year earlier the box office increased by 48 percent, then this year only by 4.6 percent. However, this did not prevent the establishment of some absolute records. In particular, the fantastical movie "Mermaid" of local production became the first movie project in the history of the Chinese distribution, which managed to earn more than $ 500 million at home.
