George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series that formed the basis of the hit TV series Game of Thrones, will donate the first edition of The Hobbit to Texas A&M University in his collection. This is reported on the official website of the educational institution.

This version of J.R.R. Tolkien is noticeably different from the later one, which was edited so that the story is more organically woven into the plot of The Lord of the Rings. The publication contains illustrations by the British writer himself. The ceremony will take place on February 27, 2015 at 11 am local time in the Rudder Auditorium.

The entrance for both university students and all fans of Martin's work is completely free. The writer from the stage will read several excerpts from The Hobbit and answer questions from the audience. This will be the five millionth book in the library of the educational institution. Martin will also bring a collection of manuscripts, books and artifacts that will be on display.

Recall that the story "The Hobbit, or There and Back" was first published in 1937. The writer who composed this story for his children had no plans to publish it. However, the unfinished manuscript ended up in the hands of the editor of Allen & Unwin Susan Dagnal, and the latter insisted that the writer complete his work.
