The Ukrainian Oscar Committee has decided on a movie that will represent the country in the battle for a place in the Best Foreign Language Film nomination at the Oscar 2019. As reported on the committee's official Facebook page, the stake was placed on a drama called "Donbass", which was created by director Sergei Loznitsa.

It was alleged that the script for "Donbass" was based on documentary materials from amateur videos published originally on YouTube. The picture tells about the events in the East of Ukraine. The movie premiered in May 2018 at the 71st International Cannes Film Festival. The movie received an award for directing in the program "Unassigned View". "Donbass" is the product of the joint work of moviemakers from Ukraine, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Romania.

Recall that the presentation of the list of nominees for the Oscar 2019 will take place on January 22, 2019. The very inaugural Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 24, 2019. At the time of this writing, a movie has not yet been selected that will compete for a place in the nomination from USA.
