In recent years, we hear more and more statements about the death of single-player games and we have to admit that, judging by the latest trends in the gaming industry, there is some truth in these words, at least for linear single projects. The phenomenal popularity of "Battle Royale", the abundance of service games and Open-world projects have significantly reduced the number of releases among classic singleplayer games by 8-15 hours. But there is good news as well. In the coming years, singles are predicted to be an unprecedented success and will help in this, oddly enough, the Epic Games Store and the recently announced Google Stadia.
This statement was made by Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala at the Reboot Develop Blue conference. He is confident in a positive future for companies that, like Remedy, are creating high-value AAA projects. First of all, we should thank for the development of the single-player gaming segment the aggressive policy of Epic Game Store, hated by many players, cooperation with which has already brought the first positive results for Remedy. The development of streaming services from Sony, Microsoft and the arrival of Google Stadia on the gaming market can also be regarded as positive trends that open up a new audience for developers.
“The race is on for the Netflix analog from the video game world. We don’t know when this will happen, how it will happen if we can expect access to games by subscription ... But the main thing here is that soon the big boys will invest significant resources in supporting streaming platforms. At the same time, everyone knows that you need exclusive content to attract players. In general, thanks to new platforms, our games will receive greater reach and greater opportunities for cooperation with platform holders. " - said Thero Virtala.
Separately, the CEO of Remedy, based on his own experience of working with major game publishers, noted that until recently, major companies in the games industry were not sure about the prospects of investing in single products. But now, thanks to the success of Sony games and Ubisoft projects, publishers are investing heavily in the AAA singleplayer segment and the prospects for single player games are better than ever before in the history of the gaming industry.
Tero Vital's words instill confidence in the future of single-player projects. In addition, the excellent sales of numerous single games in the first half of 2019 clearly prove that it is simply pointless to bury games that are not aimed at multiplayer today.
A new Remedy game called Control will be released on August 27, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC in an exclusive version for the Epic Game Store. In our separate article, you can read the first impressions of Western journalists from Control.
