It is “for”, not “above” - this is how domestic localizers decided to translate the name of the biographical drama Rebel in the Rye, which tells about the life and creative path of the American writer J.D. Salinger. The director was Danny Strong, for whom this picture became a debut in a big movie. The script is based on the book by Kenneth Slavensky and stars Nicholas Hoult, who has previously starred in Kill Your Friends and War of the Currents. The now-disgraced but still great Kevin Spacey, the charming Zoey Deutsch as young Oona O'Neill and American Crime Story star Sarah Paulson also took part in the filming.|
The plot of The Catcher in the Rye is built around the life of Salinger, who is destined to become one of the most famous writers of the 20th century. The passionate Jerome takes his first steps in his career under the guidance of editor Whit Burnett, who encourages the young talent to write story after story. Then the future classic volunteers to go to war, where he fully experiences all its horrors and hardships, and returns with a huge baggage of thoughts and ideas. And if at first Salinger doubted that Holden Caulfield's story could turn out not a story, but a real novel, Burnett quickly convinced him.
Fans of films about writers will surely pay attention to some cliches in the depiction of the creative process: like all authors in search of a muse, young Salinger crumples pages with unsuccessful text and throws them into the trash. Like many of those who have taken place - he listens to the wise experience and the editor who counts on profit. But for viewers who are interested in watching how the writer's feelings and aspirations were reflected in the image of his character, this picture will give rich food for thought.
