Ben Affleck to direct a drama about the terror in the Congo

Image Two-time Oscar winner Ben Affleck has chosen a new project. As a director and one of the producers, he will work on the historical drama King Leopold's Ghost ("The Ghost of King Leopold"). The script is written by Farad Safinia (Apocalypse), based on the bestseller of the same name by Adam Hochschild. The film is produced by Pearl Street Films and Sikelia Productions, and Martin Scorsese will be producing it along with Ben.

The film is set in the late 1800s in the Congo, when the state was in fact the personal property of the Belgian king Leopold II. He shamelessly siphoned off all the resources from him and physically destroyed the local population, until several initiative human rights defenders stood in his way: a black American missionary, a British journalist and an Irish spy. They created the first organization to defend the rights of local citizens and threw all their strength into confronting the unbelievable monarch.

Earlier, the herd know that Affleck also plans to shoot the war drama "Phantom Army" about the exploits of the eponymous US Army Special Forces unit during World War II. Which of these films the director will take on in the first place, has not yet been reported.
