MGM will go under the hammer

Image Another big deal is coming to Hollywood. Apple and Netflix are eyeing one of the oldest Dream Factory film companies, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

In November 2010 MGM filed for bankruptcy. A month later, the studio got out of the debt hole, enlisting the support of new investors. It looks like it is having funding difficulties again. It is highly likely that the studio will have no choice but to go under the wing of some more successful company.

The deal is unlikely to overshadow the $ 71 billion deal between Disney and Fox. The market value of MGM is estimated at a much more modest amount - $ 10 billion. Firstly, its golden days are long over. If earlier she was one of the leading film companies in the world, now she is content with supporting roles. Secondly, the buyer will get only a small part of her filmography: at one time MGM sold Turner Entertainment the rights to most of the films that were released in the period from 1924 to 1985.

Even in a truncated version, the MGM library looks pretty solid, since the company has left behind several popular franchises. The main interests for Netflix and Apple are "Rocky", "Robocop" and "Pink Panther". Do not forget that MGM also owns an active television department (Vikings, The Handmaid's Tale, Fargo) and half of the rights to the James Bond spy saga.
