The Hunger Games prequel has officially gone to work

Image Film studio Lionsgate has officially announced the start of work on the prequel to the Hunger Games franchise. It will be based on Susan Collins' latest novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which hits bookstore shelves on May 19. Francis Lawrence will return to directing, Oscar-winning Michael Arndt will be scripting and Nina Jacobson will be producing. The same trio have worked on previous adaptations of Collins, which grossed nearly $ 3 billion at the box office.

The novel is set in the same universe, and the plot focuses on the life of the future president of Panem and the main antagonist of the trilogy, Koryalan Snow. He is young, handsome and charming, and although his family knows firsthand about difficult times, 18-year-old Coriolanus hopes to be able to change his future when he brilliantly acts as steward of the tenth Hunger Games. First, however, he will face severe disappointment as the mentor of a tributary girl from the impoverished 12th District.

The first film in the franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence was released in 2012, grossing a good box office and opening the door to the big screens of post-apocalyptic youth such as The Maze Runner and Divergent.
