Max was born on April 10, 1929 in the family of a teacher and professor of ethnology. The native of Lund became interested in the stage during his school years. The guy was so talented that he was called to the cinema already in his second year: von Sydow made his screen debut in 1949 in the film "Only Mother".

Six years later, Max moved to Malmo, where he met the rising star of European cinema - screenwriter and director Ingmar Bergman. The duo began their collaboration on the theater stage. After several successful performances, Bergman invited his friend to join the philosophical parable "The Seventh Seal", which has become a classic of world cinema. Subsequently, Ingmar and Max presented ten more films together.

In the mid-60s, Max tried his hand at Hollywood. The actor went on to trump playing Jesus Christ in The Greatest Story Ever Told.
