Chris Hemsworth: ”Felt like a schizophrenic lately”
Chris Hemsworth , known worldwide as the superhero of the MCU Marvel Thor , has much more to offer us than just a magical hammer and a sulky look. He did a great job with Ron Howard in the underrated Formula 1 drama Race, and now the two have presented another true story to the public - In the Heart of the Sea . The film is based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick about the wreck of the whaling ship Essex. A huge whale sank the ship, leaving the crew to drift in the ocean, starve and fight for life for three months.Hemsworth plays Owen Chase , the first mate of Pollard (Benjamin Walker). After the crash, Owen is in command of one of the lifeboats. For the role, the actor had to lose almost 15 kilograms to give himself a gaunt look.  Tell us a little about your weight loss ... Now I weigh about 84 kilograms, and in the image of Thor I weighed 98. This does not mean that I am some kind of unsportsmanlike white guy, I just worked on another role, and now it is not easy to come back to form. Was it hard to lose weight? Yes. This is the second time I'm losing weight for a role. And both times I did it with Ron . Maybe he has some fad about my weight, I don't know. The body has muscle memory, and every time you tone your muscles, they tend to stay in it. In general, all that is needed is to be severely undernourished and exhausted by training. What worried you the most when preparing for filming? How difficult did they seem to you? Of course, each film has its own difficult parts, but we overcome them with the whole crew. Everyone encourages each other in difficult times. We knew from the very beginning what was ahead. I can't say that I was looking forward to it, but everything went well. Has the constant hunger affected your game? If you need to be nervous, angry, frustrated, depressed or moody, then hunger definitely helps. It's hard enough to portray the opposite of your emotions. At that moment, when the heroes were lost at sea, I did not have to convince myself that I was exhausted and hungry, because I really wanted to eat.  What is it like working with Ron Howard? I really like about Ron his varied taste and professional experience in different genres. You can even call it a kind of visiting card. I think he deliberately challenges himself and creates situations in which you need to push boundaries, think outside the box. The most valuable thing for us now is that we know each other well. We don't need to spend months getting used to each other, we immediately plunge into the process. It's great. During the filming of In the Heart of the Sea, you continued to promote the second Thor. What was it like combining both projects? Not really, of course. The last six months have been challenging: I just finished filming Michael Mann's Cyber and immediately started new ones. I had exactly 24 hours in between. And then there are these press tours - Races and Torah 2 . So all four characters from these pictures coexisted in my head. I even felt like a schizophrenic, but then I somehow got into a rhythm ... But ideally, I would still prefer to concentrate on one character.  Where did these strange scars on your character come from? This is part of his story. Many of the men then looked pretty shabby. In the film, everything from the costumes to the appearance of the characters recreates the severity of the time. Going out to sea was not some brave daring fun. It was the hardest fishing, real hardcore. Something even like a war: you go out to sea and do not know if you will return. And there, in the sea, you are for a very, very long time. Tell us more about the relationship between your hero and Captain Pollard . We know about their confrontation, but in the book the captain is much more accommodating ... There may be some discrepancies between the movie, the book, and other sources ... Their relationship is based on respect, which is always interesting in competition. There was a similar connection between the heroes of "Race" . Ron and I often discussed this point: if you don't respect your opponent, you have no desire to compete with him.
