US Box Office bows to TChalla
No surprises were expected at the North American box office over the weekend (February 23-25). Black Panther still rules the US box office, giving no chance to opponents. On the other hand, the film has no strong competitors, and this, of course, is one of the advantages of a release outside the summer blockbuster season.The past weekend brought Ryan Coogler's film $ 108 million, while the audience of "Black Panther" sank 46%. The film about T'Challa became the fourth film in the history of the box office, which in its second week managed to earn more than $ 100 million. In total, the blockbuster grossed $ 400 million at home, and this milestone was overcome in just ten days. Jurassic World achieved a similar result at the same pace, and The Force Awakens is still the undisputed champion in the speed of collection - $ 400 million mastered the seventh episode in eight days. The main merit of Kugler and his team in the case of "Black Panther" is that they went beyond the boundaries of the genre, adding political and cultural aspects to the blockbuster. Even after the release of "Logan," James Mangold said that you shouldn't be locked into superheroics, otherwise you will get something mediocre. The efforts of Kugler and Marvel were appreciated not only by viewers, but also by critics. Like most modern comic books, Black Panther boasts a flawless picture, and yet among all its congeners in the Marvel universe, the film is the most mundane.  Now "Black Panther" with its $ 400 million is on the fifth line among Marvel blockbusters, but very soon both "Confrontation" and "Iron Man 3" will fall before the king of Wakanda. Overseas viewers also appreciated the film about T'Challa, who added $ 304 million to its piggy bank. The second place is taken by the debutant of the week, the comedy "Night Games". The movie began its trip to home theaters with an amount of $ 16.6 million, which is generally comparable to other representatives of the genre with an R rating. For example, “Wedding Frenzy” started at one time with $ 16.6 million, while “New Year's Corporate” and “Active search ”were noted in the amounts of $ 16.9 million and $ 17.9 million, respectively. If "Games Night" follows suit, then North American distribution will bring them about $ 50 million. Not too impressive given the $ 37 million budget, but the WB management should be glad that the tape does not repeat the fate of last year's failures like "House" and "Battle of the Teachers" ".  The film received a good B + rating from the audience, and in the future it will probably be helped by positive reviews from critics, who often find fault with comedies with an adult rating. According to them, the script by Mark Perez is replete with witty dialogues, and directors Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley brilliantly directed a number of intense action scenes.  Peter Rabbit dropped to the third line of the top-5, adding an additional $ 12.5 million to its financial asset. The family audience continues to support Will Gluck's tape, despite the abundance of negative reviews. For a week, the tailed merry fellows from the garden of Beatrix Potter lost only 28% of viewers and now boasts an amount of $ 71.3 million. Compared with the "Riot of the Eared", the "Peter Rabbit" is still lagging behind it, and is likely to end the rental at $ 90 over a million.  The fourth place went to another newcomer to the rental, the fantastic thriller "Annihilation". Film fans have been waiting for the next project by Alex Garland for several years, but, as in most cases with auteur films, the film adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer's book could not reach the mass audience. A humiliating C grade and $ 11 million in gross are all that Annihilation has gotten from moviegoers. Apparently, the Paramount studio was ready for such a turn of events, since so far only US residents will be able to see the thriller on the big screens - the major sold the rights to broadcast in most other countries to the online service Netflix. As for the reviewers, they praised Garland's film. The director has turned out an intense thriller, a fantastic puzzle, creepy and beautiful at the same time, capable of causing fear and awe in the beholder. Annihilation is yet another proof that Garlenda can rightfully be considered one of the best directors in this genre.  The last part of the trilogy "Fifty Shades of Gray" closes the top five. The third film grossed another $ 6.9 million, and its total home box office achievements are estimated at $ 89.6 million. Fortunately, viewers from other countries were more loyal to the melodramatic thriller and gave Fifty Shades of Freedom $ 230.8 million, which, however does not save the tape of James Foley from the title of the worst in the entire trilogy.
