All people are born free

Image Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer ("The Servant") has chosen to support independent film companies Wonderstar Productions and Truth 13 Productions in the work on the biographical drama about the slave girl Beth Freeman, who has made a huge contribution to the struggle for the rights of America's black people. According to Variety, the 2012 Oscar winner will take over as executive producer of Mommy Beth *.

Freeman was born into slavery. In 1751, seven-year-old Beth was transported from New York to Massachusetts on an estate with the daughter of her former owner. Freeman was distinguished by incredible fortitude and was not afraid to protect the rest of the slaves from the unbalanced mistress of the house. In 1780, during a public reading of the Massachusetts Constitution, Beth heard the phrase “All people are born free and equal,” which prompted her to seek the advice of attorney Theodore Sedgwick.

A year later, Beth became the first black slave in Massachusetts history to prove her right to freedom in court. Freeman's case set a legal precedent that helped abolish slavery across the state.

The plot of the biographical drama will be based on the book "A Free Woman in God's Land" by Yana Lays and Anne-Elizabeth Barnes. The screenplay will be written by Stephen Glantz (Showdown in Little Tokyo), and the director's chair will be taken by young director Alethea Ruth.
