The Grinch Hijacked the US Box Office

Image In the last review, the first three places according to the results of the US box office went to the newcomers of the rental, but for the debutants of the last weekend (November 9-11), the situation was not so rosy. If "The Grinch" still managed to steal the hearts of the audience, then the other two premieres cannot boast of outstanding fees.

The animated film about the green grumbler started at $ 66 million. If we look at other cartoons that were released in November, the Grinch ranks third among them by this indicator, behind only The Incredibles ($ 70.5 million) and Frozen ($ 67.4 million). Among the films with a Christmas theme, the new adaptation of Dr. Seuss's book is indeed the first: she overtook her brother - the film "The Grinch Stole Christmas", which started at $ 55.1 million.

The success of the new Grinch is predetermined by several factors. For the first time in a long time, an animated film for children has opened in North American cinemas. Its direct competitor is now only Smallfoot, which was released seven weeks ago. The name of the title character is quite recognizable: someone remembers him from the already mentioned tape by Ron Howard, someone from the cautionary tale of Dr. Seuss. Finally, the cartoon was created by Illumination, which already guarantees at least a generous dose of humor.

If we compare the tape of Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mouger with other Illumination projects, then she began a trip to cinemas on a level with Despicable Me ($ 56.4 million), better than Zveropa ($ 35.3 million), but worse than Minions "($ 115.7 million) and" The Secret Life of Pets "($ 104.4 million). On the other hand, the Grinch still has plenty of time and a few holiday weekends to recoup its $ 75 million budget. Surely, overseas viewers will help the grumbler, although so far they are behaving rather modestly: outside the United States, the cartoon has collected only $ 12.7 million.

The animated film, like the previous film about the Grinch, did not impress critics too much, but their assessment did not always coincide with the opinion of the audience. So, among the newcomers of this week, reviewers rated the thriller "Overlord" higher than others, and it took only third place in the financial rating. As for The Grinch, the moviegoers gave it a high A- rating. Critics compare the film adaptation to a wrapper from Christmas gifts - everything is beautiful and bright, but quickly forgotten.

Bohemian Rhapsody dropped to second place, retaining more than half of the viewers and adding another $ 30.9 million to its piggy bank. For two weeks at the box office, the biographical drama managed to raise $ 100 million, which is almost twice its budget. Among musical biopics, Brian Singer's tape is still in third place, but probably by next week it will overtake the film "Cross the Line" with its $ 119.5 million and aim at the result of "Street Voices" ($ 161.2 million).

The third line of the top-5 is the thriller Overlord. And while Julius Avery's film climbed pretty high on its first weekend, the $ 10.1 million isn't exactly what Paramount was hoping for. Analysts blame the Overlord genre for everything: a hybrid of action and zombie horror will appeal to a narrow circle of viewers. However, critics praise Avery's work, and Stephen King praised the film, comparing it in style to early Spielberg.

In fourth place is the fairy tale "The Nutcracker and the Four Kingdoms", which after an unsuccessful start has lost 53% of its audience and is clearly aiming to become one of the failures of the year. High-budget fantasy, which cost Disney $ 120 million, has so far raised only $ 35.3 million in the United States (of which $ 9.6 million - over the past weekend). Viewers from other countries were more loyal to The Nutcracker and paid $ 61.4 million for watching it.

Closes the top five "The girl who got stuck in the web." Another film about the hacker Lisbeth Salander met the studio's expectations, but the $ 8 million amount is not an outstanding achievement. It takes stars to lure viewers to a movie show in the fall. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Fincher could boast of Daniel Craig, but Briton Claire Foy is by no means a reason for Americans to spend money on a movie ticket. According to polls, many viewers were surprised by the fact that Rooney Mara was not invited to the main role again, and the choice of the primary source is very doubtful, because Stig Larsson was no longer writing The Girl Who Was Stuck in the Web.

In any case, analysts doubt that the thriller will even be able to break even, and the opinion of critics can drown it even more. Sony has positioned the new "Girl" as a film about the female counterpart of James Bond, and therefore it is not surprising that Lisbeth Salander is more like a superhero here than a vengeful woman protecting women. This is what alienated the reviewers, because in this way director Federico Alvarez deprived Lisbeth of its uniqueness.
