Ridley Scott will return to the arena
Ridley Scott was nominated three times for an Oscar in the director's category, and one of the films that brought the director recognition from film academics is the epic Gladiator. For many years, Scott intended to direct the sequel to the drama, but in the end did not find support from the management of Dreamworks, and the studio sent the sequel to the shelf.News portal Deadline reports that the filmmaker is again returning to the idea of filming a sequel to "Gladiator". This time the script was written by Peter Craig ("City of Thieves"), and Ridley himself intends to lead the filming of the tape. The main character of the second part will be Lucius - the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). In the finale of Gladiator, Maximus (Russell Crowe) saved a mother and son from a cruel tyrant and made an indelible impression on the boy. Since Maximus died in the ending of the original film, Russell Crowe's character is unlikely to return in the second part. Although once Nick Cave ("The Drunkest District in the World") wrote the script for a sequel in which Maximus went to hell and back, dealing with gods and other supernatural forces. However, the idea was too bizarre and wild for Hollywood, and therefore Dreamworks considered showing the further development of Rome with Lucius at the center of events. True, then Ridley Scott himself noted how difficult it was to realize this idea, but, apparently, the director changed his anger to mercy.  This time the Dreamworks studio is not involved in the work on the second "Gladiator" - it was replaced by Paramount, and Universal can help with financing the picture. Given how many other projects Scott has planned, it's hard to imagine when the sequel will hit screens.
