US Boxing Office Goes To Mating Games

Image Last weekend (February 9-11), significant changes finally took place in the North American box office: the newcomers ousted the former leaders and occupied the top three lines of the financial rating, although the old-timers do not give up and continue to replenish their already tightly packed wallets.

As expected, the final part of the "Fifty Shades of Gray" trilogy, no matter how negative critics and moviegoers may refer to it, took the top line of the top 5. The film "Fifty Shades of Freedom" did not reach the predicted results, but it was not far behind its predecessor either. James Foley's tape grossed $ 38.8 million in the first weekend, while a year earlier the sequel started at $ 46.6 million. If the third part keeps the dynamics of the second, then the trip to US cinemas will end at $ 95 million.

And although the numbers in the home box office do not seem transcendental, in other countries the trilogy based on the books of E.L. James is more popular: there viewers gave $ 98.1 million for her viewing. This allowed the franchise to overcome the $ 1 billion mark. What can we say, Universal studio knows how to attract women to film screenings, and the fairer sex among the audience of "Fifty Shades of Freedom" there were significantly more than men.

As for the ratings, the triquel received a good B + rating from the cinema goers, and professional critics traditionally scold melodrama, although some managed to find pluses in Fowley's film. At least, it was not boring to watch the development of events in the film series according to the phenomenal book cycle. Too many cliches, beautiful outfits, an abundance of luxury in the complete absence of any drama, and as a result, the reviewers got the impression that a teenager wrote the script for the picture. On the other hand, fans of the literary original should be happy: the plot of the final part is very close to the original.

In second place is "Peter Rabbit" - a modern film adaptation of Beatrix Potter's fairy tales from the Sony studio. After The Adventures of Paddington II failed at the North American box office, the major was very pessimistic about his new creation. However, Will Gluck's tape managed to surprise everyone: it mastered $ 25 million at the start. In the near future, Peter Rabbit will have no competitors, and analysts believe that it can repeat the success of Stuart Little and its continuation.

In the meantime, the film about the restless rabbit boasts a high A- rating from viewers, whose opinion critics do not always share. According to the latter, visually "Peter Rabbit" is beautiful, but the filmmakers could not use the potential of the original to the fullest, and even Beatrix Potter herself, if she were alive, would hardly have liked what Hollywood did with her characters.

Another newcomer to the rental, the drama "Train to Paris", took the third place in the top 5. Clint Eastwood's new film failed to replicate the success of The Sniper, and the $ 12.6 million amount is no reason to brag. The film opened in theaters at the level of "Flags of Our Fathers" ($ 10.2 million) and "J. Edgar "($ 11.3 million). “13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” and “Cavalry” have already proved by their own example that it is quite difficult to attract audiences to cinemas for such films, and when reviewers also criticize the project, the task becomes much more complicated.

Initially, Train to Paris was positioned as a thriller, but in reality it turned out to be not a very dynamic drama. Eastwood does not change his style, but this time he preferred minimalism, which, however, does not detract from the merits of the film. As a plus for the director, one can confidently write down the fact that he invited real heroes to the main roles, who prevented a terrorist attack on the train. However, an attempt to mix the themes of patriotism, friendship, faith in God and fate in one tape and bring them to a common denominator still failed.

"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" dropped to the fourth line. An additional $ 9.8 million went to the film's box office, which had been the leader in the box office for several weeks, and its total earnings are now $ 365.7 million. With such results, it is not surprising that Sony has begun work on a sequel.

Another veteran of the top five, the musical "The Greatest Showman", is not going to give up either. After eight weeks on the big screens, the film is still able to attract new viewers: last weekend they paid $ 6.4 million to watch a great performance. Now you can bet on who will be able to displace the tape from the top-5 and how much more it will earn in home rental.
