Rare Bird Dance

Image Who do you think of first of all when you hear the phrase "the best actor of our time"? Daniel Day-Lewis? Leonardo DiCaprio? Benedict Cumberbatch? Few people associate Sam Rockwell with this status. But some of his works are distinguished by such an emotional depth that many of his colleagues never dreamed of. And note - Sam does not limit himself in the choice of roles. High-budget Hollywood, the cozy world of indie cinema, comedy and drama are equally easy to obey him. Even in a solo performance, being on the moon alone with himself, Rockwell annealed so that mom does not cry. Today this star turns 50 without the "super" prefix, and we have a super reason to remember why we love Sam and why he should still be registered in the pantheon of geniuses.

Serious cabbage soup

Sam Rockwell has many comedic roles under his belt, and if you study them consistently, you will notice that he is not one of those who take himself too seriously. On the contrary, with an absolutely serious face, he speaks and creates all kinds of heresy, looking at which it is impossible to hide a smile. He is not shy about being stupid and pompous on the screen, self-deprecating and sarcastic, in general, with Rockwell's self-irony on you. In contrast, by the way, from the aforementioned greats, who give drama to rupture the aorta, otherwise it seems like frivolous.

One of the first major roles of Sam Rockwell was Guy Fliegman from the fantasy comedy "In Search of the Galaxy", a parody of the cult "Star Trek". Guy is a typical "Redshirt" whose only function is to be killed. According to the plot, the former and already forgotten stars of the series "Protector" find themselves in a real space adventure. Guy also gets into it, constantly worrying that none of his colleagues on the set remembers him. And in general, they all wildly enrage him with their arrogant behavior and attacks of star fever, while Fligman himself, finding himself in a truly dangerous situation, begins to panic wildly, believing that here he will be consumed first. As a result, at some point, Guy still shows courage and becomes one of the main members of the space crew. Unsurprisingly, the actor soon landed a role in Charlie's Angels.

And since the role in "Charlie's Angels" turned out to be much more meaty and nutritious, and its villainous essence was superimposed on the acting out Rockwell's appetite, our today's hero of the day benefited from it in full. After which, of course, offers to portray all kinds of antagonists fell on him. And the most ambitious of them was the contract for the role of Justin Hammer - business rival of Tony Stark from the second "Iron Man". Hammer, considering himself smarter and more talented than the competitor, does his best to discredit Tony and create his own super suit. Sam Rockwell, who in preparation for the role was inspired by Salieri from "Amadeus", could not resist and generously poured comedy into this image, but even such Justin Hammer is easy to translate into real life - in his place you can imagine any arms dealer. In a word,
Simply fantastic!

There is one picture in Rockwell's career in which he is a real superstar. Moreover, almost everything flattering that can be said about her relates precisely to the performance of the leading actor. And this is Luna 2112. In Duncan Jones's debut work, there is a small moment where the protagonist's wife appears on the screen, and there is the voice of Kevin Spacey, otherwise this psychologically difficult and confusing film is solely based on Sam. Moreover, the actor copes with his task with some outrageous ease, as if not even dropping a drop of sweat.

While most sci-fi films strive to tear down the roof of the cinema with their special effects, "Moon 2112" completely blows the roof of the viewer due to Sam's performance. According to the plot, after two years of complete isolation on the Moon, astronaut Sam Bell dreams of finally returning home, but everything goes awry after the accident, and soon the protagonist learns something incredibly creepy about himself. And if you are not familiar with this feed, you should find out the main plot twist directly when watching, and not from the article. In general, Sam Bell on the Moon is Sam Rockwell in his best tragicomic form, where he feels like a fish in water and the viewer feels like on an emotional roller coaster. And this is, without a doubt, one of those cases when only some ridiculous accident can explain the absence of the name of Sam Rockwell among the nominees for the "Oscar". By the way, even the hashtag #SamRockwellOscar appeared after the release of Luna 2112, not Three Billboards.

Professional thief and psychopath

Sam Rockwell is a professional thief. He constantly steals scenes from his more stellar counterparts in almost every film he brings. For example, in the tragicomedy "The Way, the Way Home," he did it with Allison Jenny, Steve Carell and Toni Collette, playing a hilarious, chatty, gouging mentor for an excruciatingly growing awkward teenager. And if the director of some picture allows Rockwell to dance in the frame, then keep him seven at all. He is one of the most flexible actors in Hollywood and beyond, and watching dance scenes from movies with Sam or evening TV shows with his participation can pleasantly kill a couple of hours of your time.

Another notable milestone in the career of the hero of the day is the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's Choke. The film was not particularly successful, I suppose, because everyone was expecting a second "Fight Club" from him, but Sam, with his ability to hide deep drama behind laughter, turned out to be very useful here. Technically, this is a comedy, but if you dig deeper, "Choking" will grab you by the throat thinking about sex addiction, child abuse, the problems of the elderly and all sorts of existential problems.

Image President of all genres

The range of Sam Rockwell's talent is as wide as the Dnieper River, to the middle of which, as you know, a rare bird will fly. He looks equally organic in the roles of very strange dudes like the narcissistic president of the entire Galaxy named Zaphod Beeblebrox, and in the black comedies of Martin McDonagh as one of the psychopaths talking about Gandhi, STD clinics and Irish alcoholism. With one foot Sam Rockwell stands on the drama bank, the other on the comedic one, but more often than not he makes whimsical knees somewhere in between and definitely deserves more attention from film producers.

The actor himself once jokingly said that his career is similar to the afterlife, meaning that many of his films have found real success only after some time. Fortunately, in 2017 this nefarious tradition was broken by Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Fanfare stunned Sam Rockwell right after the premiere, and after the hype, the well-deserved Oscar arrived.

Sam Rockwell has a good start ahead: at the end of this year we will see him in the image of George W. Bush in the movie "Vice President", then he will play a Nazi in Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit", but the most promising for the career of our hero of the day is the television biopic choreographer Bob Fossey, where Sam will dance with Michelle Williams.

In an interview, he admitted that he thinks of himself as a craftsman actor:“I have some talent and I work hard on myself, but I'm not one of those who, like Brando or Pacino, are kissed by God”. Well, Sam, if God didn’t kiss you, then you definitely couldn’t do without a friendly nickname ...
