Review of the movie Diana: A Love Story. But no one will stay with me

Biopic is a rather ungrateful genre for moviemakers who create in it. On the one hand, of course, this is the rich personal history of the character, replete with colorful details and vivid details - — a ready-made script for a million dollars. On the other hand, — all viewers are concerned not only with the external resemblance of the actor to the prototype, but also with how skillfully and reliably the public image of the figure under discussion is reproduced on the screen. To the credit of the British, who shoot a lot of biopics — and not surprising, since their `` relatives '' historical characters tops the ratings of the most popular personalities — I must say that they do it well and they do it with love. Scotsman Albert Finney became a brilliant Sir Winston Churchill, Elena Mironova, aka Helen Mirren, delighted the audience, and academicians with their Queen. In the same movie, by the way, there was a very successful Tony Blair performed by Michael Sheen. The Australian Cate Blanchett turned out to be a good Elizabeth, daughter of Henry XVIII. Yes, and Meryl Streep fit well into the image of the Iron Lady.

Princess Diana, Lady Dee, the sweet face of the prim British monarchy, which ranks 3rd in the list of the 100 greatest British in history, a character just readable at first glance. One of the most popular women in the world, the queen of hearts, an active philanthropist and peacemaker, a cult figure deified by some to the point of holiness ... with an unhappy personal fate. It was on this personal drama that the German director Oliver Hirschbiegel focused, movieing no longer a biopic about a royal person, but a melodrama or a drama about an ordinary woman. the high status of which remains outside the framework of history, and the path of life was not strewn with roses. This is the story of the last two years of her life, when she actually broke up with Charles and tried to integrate into normal human life.

The movie initially gives the impression of some superficiality, excessive simplicity, neutrality and even emotionlessness. Neither the Windsors, nor other public figures, only Diana and her unknown passion for the Pakistani heart surgeon (Naveen Andrews), their casual acquaintance, awkward start, secret meetings with dressing up and moving in the trunk of a car, plans for life together, stormy showdowns. The hobby is somewhat unconvincing, in a heart surgeon there is neither fire nor male charisma, there is no spark between lovers, therefore, the entire novel gives the impression of a desperate desire for personal female happiness at all costs to spite everyone. In general, humor in the movie is hard, the princess is often put in the position of a teenager imposing her attention, or a manipulator, pulling the object of his hobby by the strings with the help of unlimited connections.

First, you attribute this surface to Hirschbigel, who, in his own words, is not a fan of Diana and knew little about her story before starting work. Then you remember the need to maintain the utmost political correctness in relation to living witnesses and participants in history, who are also members of the royal family. However, by the end of the story, the story is gaining a little more serious dramatic intensity. When Diana's romance comes to a boiling point when you need to make a choice — stay together or part, Diana-Watts delivers several emotional monologues on the topic: all my life doors are closing in front of me; the word family for me is associated only with negative emotions and, in fact, the main slogan of the story is `` 5 billion people love me, but none of them will stay with me. ''

What say about the game Naomi Watts? - The movie, of course, is her benefit. The rest of the characters are just playing the environment. Naomi is good, lively, charming, has enough secular gloss and charm, but this is not an English princess. Even such an illusion does not arise. Lady Dee often flashed on TV and was remembered by another. The most important feature of her charm was spontaneity, the ability to melt any kind of ice in communication, always ready to break through, natural gaiety, even mischief, and inescapable irony, the status framework could not keep her from politically incorrect jokes on sensitive political topics. All this was physically felt through the screen. At the same time, either embarrassed, or a defiant look slightly sullenly. If it were not for the constant mention of the princess in front of us, you can generally forget about Diana in the movie, this is sweet Naomi Watts. But all Diana's toilets and jewelry are thoroughly reproduced in the movie, as follows from the comments to the movie, the Chopard jewelry company did its best.

I don’t even presume to judge to what extent everything as set out in the movie " Diana: A Love Story " corresponds to the historical truth. We are offered a completely alternative view of Diana's relationship with her husband, and with Dodi Al-Fayed, some new legend. Apparently, you need to wait at least for the reaction of the British royal family. But the movie itself is unlikely to go down in the history of cinema as a legend. It is too insipid and implausible for a hot sensation, too superficially secular for a full-blooded drama, to maintain the inextinguishable flame of love for the `` people '' princess too luscious.
